| The George S. Mickelson Trail is South Dakota's first rails to trails project. Completed in 1998, the trail is 114 miles in length and passes through the heart of the beautiful Black HIlls. The trail is named for the Late Governor George S. Mickelson who dedicated the first stages of the trail before hes untimely death in 1993. The trail follows the hestoric Burlington Northern rail line form Deadwood to Edgemont. The trail passes through National Forest and private lands containing more than 100 conerted railroad bridges and four rock hewn tunnels.
The trail has 14 convenient trailheads with parking and self-sale trail pass stations. The trail surface is crushed limestone and gravel. Trail fees are required of trail users age 12 and older.
